while the town got smaller / and the days unrolled

LISTENING TO: Robbie Fulks - Fare Thee Well, Carolina Gals

There's a part of me that wishes I wrote more about this past week, but some things are so rote these days that it's just the same words on a page, with only the real experience of it being something different. While it was wonderful to see my grandfather's house filled with people again, the rest of the week was rather quiet - interspersed with remote work and (unfortunately for the holiday weekend) rain. Although there were quiet a few highlights of the food variety (white chocolate baguettes from La Farm, a fun dinner out at the revamped Seven Lakes Country Club, and of course and absolutely amazing dinner over at Southern Prime), it wasn't too long before we found ourselves back on the road home.

The theme of this trip seems to be detours, which everyone knows I'm a big fan of when you have time to kill and a long road to drive. My mom and I decided again to head back home through the Chesapeake Bay, but we ended up fairly distracted by the amount of road signs (not really surprising, seeing as what I do for work, but fun nonetheless). The main one that caught our eye (as we're not huge boiled peanut fans) was for Weldon Mills Distillery. It was one of those signs that doesn't exactly tell you how far off the highway you're going once you take the exit, so it was a bit off the beaten path, but definitely worth it. The building itself was gorgeous and historical, and the small towns surrounding it driving in reminded me of being in a movie somehow. Of course the GPS didn't take us back the way we came, but we got to continue rolling along the country roads until we came back around to the highway. It wasn't too long after that that we were back along the Chesapeake Bay (quick update - after some research, the restaurant and fishing pier are closed due to renovations on the tunnels, a real bummer but completely understandable). One of the last things we did before heading home was a quick stop at Stuckey's - something that definitely reminded me of my childhood. I am a roadtrip chotkies girl, and Stuckey's never disappoints. There's just so much to do in this area, you definitely can take it for granted just because they're always there. I guess that's why I'm glad we went off the beaten path a little bit this time around. As many times as I've made this trip in the past, it had become more and more about the destination rather than the journey (I'm ignoring the cliche of that statement for the moment, because it's actually true) so it was nice to experience the opposite this time around.
