LISTENING TO: Bon Iver - Minnesota, WI I meant to write a smaller post yesterday, but as my last entry on Saturday night suggested, there were so many things to get done on Sunday that this post is coming to you from the Albuquerque Delta airline terminal as I’m waiting for my flight home (as a side note, can I just mention how much I love empty airports? Hate that it’s because it’s around 4am, but still really cool). So much to recap, so why not start at the end? Scout’s birthday Saturday night. It was really great to finally meet all of her New Mexico friends, as well as catch up with some other old college friends I haven’t seen since we graduated. It was a grand old time that really makes me wish we lived closer so we could do things like this more often. But that leads us to Sunday morning, with everyone a teensy bit worse for wear. Good thing that both Betterday coffee and La Montanita CoOp were within walking distance, as there was a real need for an Americano as w...

LISTENING TO: David Ramirez - Time There’s really nothing better than having an amazing cup of tea surrounded by plants, or eating avocado toast while feeling like you’re in a greenhouse. At least, that was my experience at Opuntia Cafe, which was our first stop of the weekend. It wasn’t particularly warm (although definitely warmer than back home), but the fact that we were able to have breakfast surrounded by an outstanding amount of natural light definitely helped. After that extremely enjoyable experience, Scout took us down Acequia Trail, one of the many walking/biking trails down into the plaza. From there, our first stop was the Santa Fe Farmers market, where I learned two things: one, New Mexicans love their green chili, and two, New Mexicans LOVE. THEIR. GREEN. CHILI. I’ve been to a lot of different markets in a lot of different places, but this was just super enjoyable to walk through - there were just so many different things to see... And also way too much amazing...

LISTENING   TO : Young Fathers - See How Ever since I’ve heard of it, Meow Wolf has been on my list of places to go. Knowing it‘s literally a hop skip and a jump from where Scout’s living in Sante Fe made it one of the easiest things to visit while I’m here, and I am happy to say it did not disappoint. The new exhibit is called “The House of Eternal Return” and it was such an unbelievably hands on experience. Meow Wolf’s exhibits always have a narrative, but the enjoyable thing is that you don’t necessarily have to follow that narrative (or even really know the specifics) to enjoy the space. Between all the secret spaces and hidden doors (and yes, I did go through the Instagram famous refrigerator, as well as the portal through the washer/dryer into the land of lost clothes), there are some absolutely fabulous video, sound and experiential pieces that have more context to them the more you explore. On top of all that, we saw an amazing live show by La Dame Blanche, whose mu...

LISTENING  TO: Coldplay - Hymn For The Weekend You know how in movies, there’s always a scene in an airport where a character is running through a terminal, and they just make it to their gate, with the stewardesses closing the doors behind them? Well, I’m here to tell you that’s an actual thing that can legitimately happen. I’m sure that DFW is a lovely airport when you’ve got time to notice it (and I have to say, for as large as it is it is amazingly easy to navigate when you’re running around like a crazy person), but the only thing I can remember is running through the terminal and watching as what looks to be like the remaining gate members were getting ready to board the plane to Albuquerque without me. The main transportation between terminals is a train that reminded me a lot of the monorail in Disney World, and although it was quick, with one of the terminals under construction/the rail not stopping st all through that terminal, if I had been five minutes later I proba...

LISTENING TO : Yuno - There’s No Going Back I guess my story starts a few weeks ago when during a visit from an old college friend, another college friend contacted us with an idea to surprise a third college friend for her birthday. A little convoluted, I know, but that’s pretty much the basic story of how I ended up driving through a freak Philadelphia snow storm this morning to end up sitting on a plane heading to Dallas, and eventually Santa Fe for the weekend.  My good friend Scout moved out to New Mexico nearly three years ago now, and it’s been on my list since to figure out when to get out to visit her. With her 30th birthday this week, and her original plans to come back east for it unexpectedly sidelined, it was decided if Scout couldn’t bring the party here, we’d bring the party to Scout. She doesn’t know this yet of course, which made the planning of this trip that much more interesting. With that said, after having reasonably mild weather all week, a ...
