LISTENING TO: Ingrid Michaelson feat. Dan Romer - You and I (but we've got our love to pay the bills) So, here we are, our last official night in Paris (although technically it's already Tuesday here, but we aren't going to count that). Our flight leaves in about 8 hours, which is nice, if you don't think about the 4AM wake-up-call and all that, but it also gives one time to reflect on the odd things about Paris. But first, before we get to that, lets recap the last bit of the trip here, kay? Good. Where we were, anyhow? Oh yes. Sunday, free day extraordinaire. By a lucky coincidence, Anna was still on the search for a specific gargoyle at Notre Dame, so we went back there, and waited, confused, in the exceptionally long line to get in. And then, when we got inside, realized we were in a Catholic cathedral. On a Sunday morning. The mass at Notre Dame could convince anyone to become religious. The acoustics were mind-blowing. I can't even describe it......

so good things come to those who wait... sure.

LISTENING TO : K'naan - If Rap Gets Jealous (feat. Kirk Hammett) The Eiffel Tower last night was RIDICULOUS. First of all, it was like all of France was there... we had to wait twice for the metro to get there because there was no way any of one of us could get on, especially a group of seven of us. It was an entertaining wait, however, because of the rugby game between Clermont and Perpignan - the fans in the station were outrageous... the only thing I could compare it to was being in Pittsburgh freshman year sitting with a bunch of drunk Steelers fans at the hotel bar after they lost to the Giants. Once we got there, groups of people were just filing into the street walking to the tower, so we just followed the masses, basically. We were going to try to ride up to the lowest portion of the Tower, but we would had to have waited there all day... so, I started to do what any good Warped Tour/Bamboozle fan would do... and started (very slowly, with many "pardon's...

LISTENING TO: FeFe Dobson - I Want You Today we got up early again to make our way down to Montmartre for Annie's tour, which was also really cool. We made it up to the Pentacoste, which is the highest point in the city (so of course, they built a church there), and it was probably one of my favorite places so far, even if it was crawling with gypsies to the point it was actually kind of scary. Everyone else was kind of really disappointed in the art/architecture of the building, but I really liked it. It was a really late Gothic period church - there was a lot of broad and dark carvings, the stained glass was really the only illumination inside (like, almost on fire kind of color). We weren't allowed to take photos, unfortunately, but it was really quite beautiful (at least in my opinion). From there, we made our way to the Cathedral of the Arts, where the stained glass was basically cubism gone crazy, and then from there down past the Dali exhibit and the front of the ce...

LISTENING TO: V V Brown - Shark in the Water So Thursday it is then [: For a weather forecast that predicted 0% rain, it decided to rain literally five steps out the door of our hotel. Which was fine for me, since I like walking in the rain, but everyone else got screwed by the street vendor whose umbrella sign read 4 euros, when in actually he jacked the price to 15 (I bought a scarf/babooshka for 5. I felt like I was channeling Grandma :D). The lovely walk in the rain brought us to the Institute la monde d'Arab, which is a gorgeous museum whose outside is made up of panels that let more or less light in depending on how the sun hits that portion of the building. Unfortunately for us, the museum is under construction/refurbishing, so all of the exhibits were closed with the exception of the gift shop and their artist display area. We got to watch a mosaic builder and a dress maker and a whole bunch of other artists - it was really quite amazing. From there we went to see...

LISTENING TO: Lady Gaga & Beyonce - Telephone Now... where was I? ...Tuesday. Alright. Tuesday was our day to spend at Versailles, which is one of the places I was looking forward to the most. I have to say, though, it was a good thing I'm not claustrophobic, if only because the amount of people also visiting Versailles was insane. The train ride over was a lot of fun, until we met up with a tour group of about fifty elementary school kids, including the blonde version of Harry Potter (he was absolutely adorable!). When we finally got to Versailles, there were so many people trying to get inside (whether on tours or free, like us) and take pictures, that you were lucky if someone didn't push you out of the way. With that said, however, Versailles is beautiful. The hall of mirrors was absolutely gorgeous, and all of the paintings and architecture and decor were simply perfect. Like the Louvre, you also don't realize how very big it is until you walk outside. Versai...

LISTENING TO: Orson - No Tomorrow Sarah Rutledge   doodle bop, please leave a message somewhere, on any wall or anything so that mom doesn't think that you and scout are dead? shes very concerned as she has seen no posting from the two of you in the last couple days. just sayin. ♥ ya. ... does this count?? hahaha okay, so yes, i've totally failed lately at this whole blog each day thing. Truth be told, however, this is the longest I've gone without posting, so you'll definitely be getting a long explanation of the past four days throughout today, if not all at once.  Let's see... where did we leave off? Saturday night? yes. Saturday night. We were going to stay in, but then Anna, Scout and I bought some beer at the grocery store and went to sit by the Seine under the bridge, which we hadn't done yet, and then come home and sleep. When we got to the Seine, however, there was a band playing on the side across from us (they had to be popular l...

non, non, non...

Image
LISTENING TO: Camelia Jordana - Non Non Non (hooray MTV France!) Where did I end yesterday when Scout's laptop died? Oh yes - the Musee d'Orsay. Crowded, but the museum compensated by having more of a concentration on the architecture of the building itself, which was beautiful. Our tour guide was really funny and knowledgeable, too, and basically took us everywhere. It was a lot of fun. After that, Anna and I took off to get lost in Montparnasse, which is a really great area that we're planning on getting back to hopefully sometime next week. We basically bookshopped and nearly bought the most awesome smelling strawberries from this open air market, which I now completely regret not doing now. We also successfully got through the metro system, which was amazing and a lot of fun. We then got ice cream before the meeting at Luxembourg, and then got their early enough to watching the rehearsals for the mime festival there this weekend. Yes, I said mime festival - a...

May 21, 2010, around 6PMish... LISTENING TO : Lynyrd Skynyrd -  Sweet Home Alabama (because, believe it or not, this song is ridiculously popular in Paris. No joke). So... about yesterday [: Let's start off with a simple statement - The Louvre. That's what this museum is - a statement. I spent nearly five hours there and didn't even begin to get through the place, that's how big it is, that's how much stuff is there. And it's not just stuff - it's amazing, insane, "Oh my God did you just see that?" kind of stuff. The only problem was the people there: tourists more concerned about taking pictures of famous pieces rather than realizing that they were RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM. I never thought this could happen (and most of you have seen me in the MOMA), but I actually was in art overload by the time we left... I was just in such a... state... that, well, I want to go back, but I'm not sure if I'll be a.) able to leave, or b.) collapse ...

catch us if you can...

Image
LISTENING TO : The Dave Clark 5 - Catch Us If You Can So hello again! Thought I'd pop in and write some more about yesterday (and this morning slash afternoon, since it's 6PM) as it seems it was basically unending... EDIT, Thursday, May 20, 2010: and that's where I ended, about... oh, half a day ago. I went to dinner and then totally forgot. So here's a quick recap of basically what I was going to tell you until today. After crepes (first a spinach and salmon one, then a coconut ice cream with bananas combination, both awesome, and both being found awesomely at a place called Crepes a GoGo about a block or so from our hotel), we basically took a walk towards the Eiffel Tower, which is crazily lit up at night. We saw a whole bunch of things (the Louvre, the Tuilleries, the Pantheon) and Paris at night is basically Manhattan without the honking (actually, Paris is basically like that all the time). By the time we got back, Scout and I passed out, which was nice...

let's start at the very beginning...

LISTENING TO: Rogers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music - Do-Re-Mi (not actually listening to it, of course, but the lyrics were appropriate). --by the way, blogspot.com comes up automatically in French until I put in my username, and Facebook made me confirm my identity about eight times over until they would let me sign in. Funny what a change in continent will make the internet do. So. Where to start. How about the car trip over with Uncle John and Daddy Joe? Sarah would say that I would have to talk about how absolutely out of my mind I was, but I refuse to give in to the memory of my nervous energy [: It was a really nice drive to JFK, with the two of them talking about how they did it when they went to London (it's funny how stories differ), and I got to catch up with Uncle John a bit when Dad got a phone call and we both thought it would be interesting to see if he would pay attention if we left him and sat down about 20 feet away. We were extra early (which...

LISTENING TO: Keri Hilson - Knock You Down ( feat. Kanye West and NeYo ). In real life: Travie McCoy - Billionaire ( feat. Bruno Mars ; new favorite song... as you'll see later on). So. It's D-Day , a.k.a. the day before we leave. I've spent all day making lists, packing, finishing laundry to finish packing, shopping, crossing things off the lists, adding things to the list, calling British Airways (15 minute wait there, thanks strike!), crossing my fingers that we'll get to London before the volcano decides to go crazy over most of Europe again, printing out information about my flight (yay for having to be at JFK 3 hours before my flight leaves), calling/texting Scout and Anna to allow for random freak-outs of happiness, calling my Uncle John to figure out where I'm going when I get to JFK, creating a Paris/Bonnaroo/Sarah Birthday playlist to musically celebrate the next month (as seen either here or on Facebook later, I PROMISE ), and last, but certai...

LISTENING TO: The Fratellis - Moriarty's Last Stand (off of the new deluxe addition of Here We Stand ; I unfortunately haven't been able to find it downloadable [legally, that is] anywhere other than the UK iTunes store, which means... sadness. Also unfortunate - the need I now have to buy the deluxe addition of Here We Stand ... so, again, sadness). So, Rachel, what are you doing up at 2AM?  Oh, nothing really. Finishing up some Midknight Express 4th Meal, trying not to think about all the work I still have to get done TO( DAY )MORROW, for which I was in the studio actually doing up until about an hour ago... And that, ladies and gents, is what my life has evolved into. Multiples is slowly battling it out with my final photography project for all of my extra time, plus with this medieval essay/presentation that may or may not be due on Wednesday (thanks to a pick from a hat that I won't even seen until Wednesday),  I'm counting down the days to Paris a...

LISTENING TO: Amber Pacific - The Good Life (which is off of their awesome new album Virtues ... thanks to Mike for getting it to me a little bit earlier than expected, I'm totally addicted haha), and Bleu - I Won't Go Hollywood (another free one that belongs on a really good darkroom mix) So, you (all of... I don't know, not that many of you) might be wondering where I've been for the past two weeks. Studio work has taken precedent over blogging - it is the last month of school after all - but no worries, I'll get up scans of "the lost weeks" (I did hand write my mandatory journal entries in my I-carry-it-everywhere-notebook, thankyouverymuch ) probably on Sunday... if I'm not too hungover / busy finishing my final multiples piece ( VIVA LA HOT DOG! ). This entry's going to be a long one, as we talked about a lot of various things in four hours this week, so hang in there folks... First up: Le Volcano. As of Monday's cla...
